- She has a bigger belly. This might seem obvious, but it’s one of the most reliable indicators of pregnancy in dogs. As the puppies grow inside her, her abdomen will expand and become rounder. You might also notice that her nipples are larger and darker than usual.
- She has a decreased appetite. Pregnant dogs often lose their appetite in the early stages of pregnancy, due to hormonal changes and nausea. They might also become picky about what they eat, or prefer smaller meals throughout the day.
- She has increased nesting behavior. As the due date approaches, pregnant dogs will start to look for a safe and comfortable place to give birth and raise their puppies. They might collect blankets, toys, or other items and arrange them in a cozy spot, such as a crate, a closet, or under the bed.
- She has more mood swings. Pregnancy can affect a dog’s temperament and make her more irritable, anxious, or affectionate than usual. She might seek more attention from you, or become more protective of her space and belongings. She might also show signs of discomfort, such as panting, whining, or licking herself.
- She has a clear discharge from her vulva. A few days before labor, pregnant dogs will have a clear or slightly bloody discharge from their vulva. This is normal and indicates that the cervix is dilating and preparing for delivery. However, if the discharge is green, foul-smelling, or excessive, it could be a sign of infection or complication and you should contact your vet immediately.
These are some of the most common signs that your dog is pregnant, but they are not definitive.
The only way to be sure is to visit your vet and have them perform an ultrasound or a blood test. If your dog is pregnant, you should provide her with proper care and nutrition, and prepare for the arrival of the puppies.
